In 1965 Malcolm X was invited to the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. However, the university refused to let him speak. He spoke nearby, to a full hall, with people overflowing onto the streets.
He was re-invited to speak at the University, by Azizah al Hibri, then a student there. The students fought the university. With very little time left before Malcolm’s departure from Beirut, the university finally agreed. In this short time, students mobilised. The hall was filled to capacity. This speech was recorded, but has never been found.
On the 50th anniversary of his assassination, Malcolm X was asked to come back to the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.
Three Gripping performances were delivered by Jamal Awar as Malcolm X, with the last performance in the very hall Malcolm spoke at in 1965. Aziza Al Hibri spoke to the audiences via Skype and shared, a letter Malcolm had written to her after he left Beirut. Peter Shebaya, a professor at the AUB, who attended both meetings at which Malcolm spoke in 1965, was present during the performances of 2015, and to the utter delight of the audiences, Malcolm X recognized him 50 years on!

X (REFERRING TO HIMSELF. SMILING BROADLY): Well, What did you expect? (PAUSE). A skeleton?
X (COMMANDING): Assalam Alycum, Beirut (PAUSE. WAITING FOR AUDIENCE RESPONSE).
AUDIENCE: Wallaycum Salam
X: I can tell by the looks on your faces you are puzzled. Some of you are wondering, Isn’t Malcolm X dead. This is just a drama, Malcolm X IS dead
X: Why have I come to talk to you now after 50 years.
X: But what on earth, am I doing here, if you’ll pardon the pun. Well, I am going to tell you who really killed me; What mischief is happening in America and what havoc America is wreaking all around the world.
X PICKS SUITCASE AND PUTS IT ON THE TABLE
X: On my way here I got lost and I saw a small round Lebanese man on a corner of a street.
X TAKES A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER OUT OF POCKET AND LOOKS AT THE ADDRESS
X: “Assalam Alaycum, brother. Do you know where this place is?’
X: The man looked astonished. I wasn’t sure what I’d said that would bring about this. Surely it couldn’t be the Salaam? It must only be when I called him brother’.
X (LIGHT HEARTED): A black man calling him brother was clearly problematic for him.
X: He looked me up and down. (POINTs TO EXPENSIVE CLOTHES. SPEAK SLOWLY) Touched my coat and even my tie and said, “How much do you get paid?”
X: I didn’t have time to deal with this and showed him the address, again.
X: He looked at it and replied, (ARABIC FIRST) “It’s not far from here. But tell me, do you have you got a sister, I need a new maid. Mine ran away. Its urgent, really. Two hundred dollars and I no hit her.”
X STANDS UP. LOOKS STERNLY AT AUDIENCE WALKING ON STAGE.
X: This is not the way I was treated the last time I came to Lebanon back in April of 1964. . Then I was welcomed by African students and Lebanese and Palestinians. I was meant to speak at the American University of Beirut, but the President wouldn’t let me. I spoke at the Sudanese Cultural Center. They said that AUB was American ground and I was anti-American. (PAUSE) That I was the enemy of America. (POINTING TO PETER)And there is someone here today, who was present when I spoke here in 1965. Good to see you Peter.

X : Me, Anti-American? (smiles) Well I guess it depends on which America we’re talking about.
X GESTURES OF HANDS
X: Some say I was killed by the Nation Of Islam; Some say it was the CIA or the FBI who were really behind it. I even heard one theory that a group of Arabs donnit. (LAUGHS POINTING AT AUDIENCE). And would you believe, it in the Arab-done-it theory, there were three of them. Two were Algerian, from the suburbs of Paris. And one of them was a well known man from Saudi Arabia, whose son would go on to become America’s most wanted Terrorist. Most wanted Allah Akbar-er
X (PAUSE): On February 21st 1965 (POINTS ACROSS CHEST) They put 21 bullets into me. (PAUSE). Right here. I saw the men who shot me, take out their guns and point them towards me. (PAUSE). I Saw the bullets coming. (PAUSE). I heard Betty screaming, and let me tell you now, that the scream of the woman I loved, was far more painful then the bullets that entered my chest. (PAUSE).

X: Brothers and sisters, friends. (PAUSE. SMILEs) and yes, enemies too. How could you not be here with us tonight, Greetings to you all?
X (PLAYFUL): I hadn’t planned to talk about France, but shortly after I got to Beirut, I saw a man, who recognised me.
X: He came running towards me with a placard in his hand, which said, Je suis Charlie. He said, (SCARED) “Brother Malcolm X, have you heard, brother?”
X: “Heard what?”
X: “About what happened?”
X : “In Paris.” He was very excited “It’s war. Its. War.”
X: I asked him, “You worry too much about the master’s house brother. Look where you are standing. Syria. Iraq. Libya. Palestine. That is war.”
X MOVES TO PODIUM
X : Let’s be perfectly clear about one thing. (HAND EMPHASIS) Charlie Hibdo -they were peddlers of racism and hate. I’m not saying they should have been killed. But all those who went around claiming Je suis Charlie, they are part of packs of racist wolves, or just ignorant sheep, who the wolves will one day eat.
X (EMPHASISING WITH EYEBROWS AND HAND): Can you separate Islamophobia from racism in the west(PAUSE.)Imagine German’s of Nazi time, or even today, trying to separate anti-Semitism from racism. How would you stretch freedom of speech to do that? And as Julius Striecher, he was a writer, before Nazi’s seized power. He published racist anti Semitic children’s literature and then ended up working for the Nazis. When the Nazis were defeated, he was tried and executed, – not for killing any one, but for spreading racism, for creating the climate for the enactment of crimes against humanity.
X (SMILES BEFORE SPEAKING): But they can do it to Muslims? Even Muslim look a likes, like the unarmed Brazilian, Jean Charles De Menezes, who was shot dead in Britain. They said he looked like a Muslim.
X: You can never separate Islamophobia from Racism in the west. It is its oxygen. And it is never too far from the surface in France, or in France’s past. Not for the 1.5 million Algerians slaughtered by France. Not for those living under France’s boot today. I am no Charlie.
X OPENS SUITCASE.
X: What a time I’ve come back, when black people in America are being gunned down, once again, like they were in the 1960’s – gunned down by the police carrying a kill black man and don’t go to jail card,
X: Let me say to the police and their masters.
X: [MODIFIED QUOTE]: You don’t scare us today with no badge or no white skin or no white sheet or no white anything else.
AUDIENCE VOICE 1: No Sir. No more.
X : The police are doing the same old dog tricks now, that they did 50 years ag. they put their club upside your head – then they turn around and accuse you of attacking them. Every case of police brutality against us follows the same pattern. They attack you, bust you all up and then drag YOU to court and charge YOU with assault.
AUDIENCE VOICE 2: That’s right.
X (SARCASTICALLY): They have lots of pretty words to describe themselves. They say America is a democracy. Well – they got the “cracy” part right. All they need now is a big white hypo in front of it. What kind of a democracy is this. What kind of freedom is that? What kind of social or political system is it when a black man has only the voice of Uncle Tom voice in court? Has no rights other than the one s the white man chooses to give you.
X: My brothers and sisters we have to put a stop to this. 
AUDIENCE VOICES 1 & 2: Yes. Tell it as it is. .
X: I’ve been watching what happened in Ferguson. Watching what they did to Michael Brown – with his hands up. Watching how they killed him. And criminalised him. And watching Eric Garner, who begged them, “I can’t Breath”. And they killed him too. I heard what their Grand Jury said. Sat right there in the room when they said it. And I heard the racist songs the police sang after Michael Brown is gunned down. And when you hear these voices that hate you, you should be angry. Very, very angry.
X: Angry that Michael Brown, with his hands up, is shot. But why oh why, in heavens name are all you good people walking around with your hands up in the air shouting, “Hand’s up – Don’t shoot.” Wake up people. Haven’t you learnt the basic lesson yet? You raise your hands in the air, they don’t care.(LONG PAUSE). They will shoot you dead. And go home to a nice meal.
X PUTS HIS HAND INSIDE AS THOUGH TO TAKE SOMETHING OUT BUT DOESN’T.
X PUTS BOTH HANDS UP.
X: They will shoot you wherever your hands are. They will criminalise you after your death. With their body armour, armoured cars and tanks and guns, They’ll say they “feared for their lives.”, They’ll say, “I was just defending my self. This black man was so strong. Strong like a beast. An animal.” And they cut you down like an animal because to them you are still an animal. Yes –These people whose ancestors sold you like animals, to them you are still an animal.
X: We have to put a stop to this.
X PUTS HANDS DOWN AND THEN CLENCHES A FIST
X: (EMPATHIC. ) Raise your hands. Yes.
X: But like this (RAISES CLENCHED FIST). When they attack, by God, you fight back. If you don’t they will burn your houses. Burn your places of workship.Shoot you in your sleep. They will terrorise you.
X: And their terrorists of course are “mentally ill”. Their pschopaths are “lone wolfs.” But our pschopaths represent billions of us.
X: And those of you who are walking around shouting Eric’s last words, “I can’t breath. I can’t Breath. I can’t breath.”
X (POINTING AT THE AUDIENCE). Every time you say “I can’t breath” they are laughing at you. They’ve even learnt how to make money, by bending your words, putting them on tee-shirts and selling them back to you. Outrageous.
X:We have to put a stop to this. The difference between life and death is but a breath – (BREATHE) so breathe. (EMPHATIC) And those of you who are lying around on roads, in America and in Britain and else where in “Die Ins. You ain’t dead. Stop dying. Stand up. Live.

X : I promised you at the beginning, I was going to tell you who killed me, and settle this issue once and for all. As you know I was shot by three armed men and had 21 bullets pumped into me, in front of hundreds of people. 21 bullets on the 21st of February.
One of those men was Thomas Hagen. He admitted he shot me – went to jail and was released in 2010. I know many of you are angry because of this. You asked, would he have been released if I was white. If he had killed a white public figure and in public. You can bet your life, (LAUGHS) he would rot in jail. Or got himself fried on the electric chair.
X: yes, Thomas Hagen was a hot-blooded young man in 1965. And yes I had differences with the Nation of Islam, and yes when you have differences, they can boil over. Especially for the passionate foot soldiers. The rank and file. But it takes something else, something far more sinister to slip into the middle of those differences and exploit them.
X: Thomas Hagen, might have pulled the trigger, but who put the bullets in the gun, who planted the seed

X (LOOKING AT PAPER): They believed they are at war with their own people, especially us, black people, and treated us like they were at war. To divide us and conquer us. Got us fighting each other instead of fighting them. Here is what they said.

X (ANGRY 1): Let us not forget, what the heart of America is: pig sick racist society – killing you, to maintain this system of white supremacy
X (TO AUDIENCE) So we’ve had Obamas, Rices and Powels and it doesn’t matter who the attorney General of the house of vampires is – the law of the vampire is not made for those whose blood is sucked.
X: You have two types of black people
When you read about them in history during slavery, the first types, they were called “Uncle Toms.” He was the house slave. You had the house slave and the field slave.
The house slave usually lived close to his master probably in the basement or the attic–but he still lived in the master’s house.. He dressed like his master. He wore his master’s second-hand clothes. He ate food that his master left on the table.
X ON PODIUM AND THEN WALKING AS HE TALKS
So whenever that house Slave identified himself, he always identified himself in the same sense that his master identified himself. When his master said, “We have good food,” the house Slave would say, “Yes, we have plenty of good food.” “We” have plenty of good food. When the master would be sick, the house Slave identified himself so much with his master he’d say, “What’s the matter boss, we sick?” His master’s pain was his pain. And it hurt him more for his master to be sick than for him to be sick himself. When the house started burning down, that type of Slave would fight harder to put the master’s house out than the master himself would.
But then you had another slave out in the field. The house Slave was in the minority. The masses–the field Slaves were the masses. They were in the majority. When the master got sick, they prayed that he’d die. If his house caught on fire, they’d pray for a wind to come along and fan the breeze.
X: So now you have a 21st-century-type of house Slave. A 21st-century Uncle Tom. He’s just as much an Uncle Tom today as Uncle Tom was 100 and 200 years ago. Only he’s a modern Uncle Tom. That Uncle Tom wore a handkerchief around his head. This Uncle Tom wears an Armani suit and a Tag Hauer watch. And this house slave – he knows how to talk the talk – he speaks the white man’s language.
X: These 21s-century uncle toms, are keeping white supremacy alive AND KICKING.
X: I am a field slave. (EMPHATIC) What type of a slave are you?

X: Today as I look around the Arab world, I see war everywhere. Strife. Death and destruction. From Libya to Lebanon, destruction. You Arabs are not even allowed to have a country. Even in the destroyed rubble, sectarian violence is being fanned and fertilized. In the name of the peaceful religion of Islam, armies of goons have been let loose.
X: America, and its agents and its agencies have been creating their own chickens.
X (NODDING/SMILING): And America can just as easily change the chickens it doesn’t like anymore and send them to the slaughter house and find themselves some new chickens. Free range, short range, long range.
X (STROKING HIS BEARD):American doesn’t care if its chickens have beards or bushes. It can deal with both. (PAUSE) As you know, it has its own powerful tribe of Bushes.
X (STROKING HIS BEARD): Now in case you think I have something against beards. I don’t. Up there many of my good friends have them, but not all of them with beards made it up there. Some didn’t make it half way. And some were caught trying to sneek upstairs and booted back down again.
X: And one of them who made it was Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu from Zanibar, he was a revolutionary leader, whom I had met before in Africa.
X: When I first met him, I shook his hand saying, “Assalamalycum, Brother. My name is Malcolm X and I am a Muslim.”
X: He took my hand both of his and replied, “Wallaycum salaam brother, My name is Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu and I am an Ex-Muslim.” (PAUSE)
X:Was I upset, you are wondering?
X: His belief or lack of it was his problem, not mine. But I Listened to him and what he said made sense. I learnt so much from him. And it was when I was in Africa, that I began to get a deeper understanding, that life was a journey of learning and we had to learn all the time, and change. That the issues we faced might have had something to do with our skin colour. But they were not skin deep. He said America is not scared of its chickens, it needs them to hatch new plots. But It IS scared of the unity of Africans in America and most of all it is scared of the unity of Africa, Asia and Latin America. That America and the West was not out in the third world, promoting some high-minded ideal. No – American has its mind on capturing our resources, and we have to stop them, and the only way we were going to stop them was if we were united.
X: He criticised me for what he said were my conservative views on women.
He Told me, “Malcolm in between studying the word of the prophet, you should make a little time for the word of a man named Karl marx.”
X: Though I had heard of him and ideas of socialism, I never thought I would actually meet himMEET** Marx. (PAUSE). I had no choice in it. I was asked to take him to god for a discussion on his ideas about historical materialism. (PAUSE) But I think there was another reason. (PAUSE) He was causing too much trouble in hell. Going around saying, ‘You have nothing to lose but your flames.’ (PAUSE)
X WALKS ON THE STAGE LOOKING AT AUDIENCE RUBBING HIS CHIN IN DEEP THOUGHT
X: When I met Karl Marx and told him what I had been asked, he replied, (GERMAN ACCENT) “You know Mister X, there is no one in the world I cannot convince about my theory of historical materialism, but I have no desire to go to meet god.”
X: “Why?’ I Asked.
X: Marx replied, “Because I am an atheist. How can I meet god when I don’t believe in him.”
X LOOKS AT AUDIENCES WITH ASTONISHMENT
X: I replied, “But you are in heaven and God wants a discussion.
X: Karl Marx went into deep thought and then asked me, “Would god have any single malt whiskey.”
X: I didn’t bother to answer this and took him to meet God. When he went inside I stood outside by the door. Hardly had Marx met god that the two of them started arguing.
X: “How can you not believe in me?”
X: “Because you don’t exist”
X: “You are because I am.”
X: “No, I am therefore you are.”
X (PAUSE): The arguments raged and went on and on.
X: I caught snippets of it. Somewhere along the line they started discussing Israel and Marx got really angry and shouted, ‘How on earth could you let this entity be created in your name.”
X: “I didn’t. I disown it. It is an abomination. An insult to Jews, I am surprised you don’t know that.”
X: And Marx was infuriated, (EMPHATIC) “Oh God help me?”
MARX PAUSES AND LOOKS AROUND FOR AN APPROPRIATE ANSWER.
X (MAR: “just a figure of speech.
X: “I can’t believe in a god that allows something created in his name, with which he doesn’t agree.”
X: “It’s for you lot to destroy, you created it…”
X: “Don’t bring me being a Jew into it, I rejected that along with you. What you have to accept that you only exist as a part of a historical process, you can’t exist for a baby that is not yet born, can you?”
X: “Not heard of miracles.”
X: “Miracles. Magic, all a-historical.”
X: “One of the biggest miracles was anyone understanding Das Kapital.”
X: And so the argument raged and raged and raged. And then everything went quiet. (PAUSE).
X: So very very quiet.
X: I knocked on the door and popped my head inside and god beckoned me inside saying, “Come in, come on in comrade X. And comrade Marx please continue.”
X: Some of you maybe thinking, how can Malcolm X, a Muslim, joke about heaven. (PAUSE) If you can’t have a bit of fun and enjoy yourself in paradise, in god’s name, where can you?
X: I am a Muslim, but I am against imposing my religious views on anyone else. Let god do what God does and judge.
XX: (QUOTE) Islam is my religion, but I believe it is my personal business. (PAUSE)
X: Allah says:There is no compulsion in religion [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 256]
X (ANGER 3) : If god says there is no compulsion in religion, then who on earth has the right to force their belief onto any one else, especially in the name of god. No one.

X: America is acting lika a god. Doing what it pleases. And now bombing Daesh in Syria and Iraq. Weren’t they arming them yesterday? People in the West are getting all confused about what their governments are doing in their name.

X (PLAYFUL): In 2014, a woman in England called Aubrey Bailey, sent this letter called ‘Clear As Mud’ to a newspaper:
“Are you confused by what is going on in the Middle-East? Let me explain. We support the Iraqi government in its fight against Islamic State (IS/ISIL/ISIS). We don’t like IS but IS is supported by Saudi Arabia whom we do like. We don’t like President Assad in Syria. We support the fight against him, but not IS, which is also fighting against him.

X (ACTUAL QUOTE): We took Africans away from their country to build our way of ease and kept them enslaved and living in fear. Terrorism.

X: We bombed Qaddafi’s home, and killed his child in 1986.
X: We bombed Libya again in 2011. And this time we bombed it, and bombed it and bombed it into the stone age and had Qadaffi killed by our goons. And look what we have now. Terrorism.
X: We bombed Iraq. We killed unarmed civilians trying to make a living.
X: We killed a million people. We bombed Iraq into the stone Age. We went looking for weapons of mass destruction, which we knew weren’t there, but then Al Qeeda wasn’t there before and now Daesh, which wasn’t their before we built our Abu Gharaibs. And now we are back, bombing and killing
X: And in Syria Assad was he not our friend before?We used his prisons to torture our terrorists and the next he is a terrorist himself.
X: And France’s chicken’s in Syria came home to roost in Paris.
X: America’s chicken’s have come home to roost as well. And now there home is not just in America. It is right here. And it is right there and it everywhere.

X: We created Legions of terror. We trained them. Armed them. Paid them and now we are fighting them!
X: America’s chickens have come home to roost.
X : We put rulers in power across the Arab world, Across Africa. Across Asia. Across Latin America. Rulers who made fortunes whilst millions died in hunger.
X: Thieves imposed on people by Terrorists. Terrorism.
X: We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki,.
X: We nuked them. Killed 166,000 of them. Burnt them. Just like that. Without any need. And here is America telling the world about human rights. This was one huge war crime – two (INDICATE WITH FINGERS) huge war crimes – and yet the criminals just went about their lives
X: And we right here, in the heart of the Arab world, we’ve never stopped supporting our, Aircraft Carrier called Israel. We will cover every crime it wants to commit to keep you divided and destroyed. That’s what it is meant to do. Is it not? Just like Daesh, it has no borders only fronts.
X: It has to be dismantled settlement by settlement and settler by settler.
X: And the world has to stop Israel and its legions, from continuously milking the concentration camps and keeping Palestinians in camps themselves.
X (ACTUAL QUOTE): We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff that we have done overseas is now brought right back into our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.
