Shadows From Syria

It was dark where I was, walking past the corner where Syrian shadows slept. The night was cold. A shadow stirred. She was six years old.

Then another shadow moved. It was a woman. Maybe 30. She was dressed in black, only her face showed.

She pointed to the girl and said, ‘Ten dollars for her, five for me.’
